A Hot Day Under the Palms.

I was able to get out and play a round at my local course, Menifee Lakes CC. Menifee Lakes CC consists of two 18 hole courses which provide all sorts of great golf opportunities and challenges. The courses are maintained well (minus the crapy bunker sand) and the staff are always friendly. I’m lucky to be able to work from home. I work for Dell Technologies and help manage our PowerEdge Server business and strategies with our channel business partners in the Southwestern US. Having a pretty busy work schedule it always nice to get out during the week for a round of golf.

My tee time was at 2 pm on July 1, 2021. I lucked out since I was actually able to play by myself for this round. I’m a “go golfer” and pace of play is important for me. Playing with others that aren’t as good or just play slow, irks me so it was good to play at a faster pace than normal. It’s summertime here in Menifee, which means it’s the hot time of year. At tee-off time it was 101 degrees and unusually humid for us. I like playing in warm weather since I’ve got some spinal injuries and arthritis issues that make it difficult to play in colder weather.

This was by far the best round of golf I’ve played in over 10 years. When I started to think about doing this golf blog, the idea was to track my progress on improving my game and consistently try to break 80 to lower my handicap index. This was a tall task I thought because I’ve been stuck scoring in the high 80’s to low 90’s for the better part of the last five years, since I moved to Menifee, dealt with physical injuries and the global pandemic where I wasn’t completely comfortable getting out in the public during the height of the several surges we had here in California.

The Score Card.

  • Front Nine : One Birdie, Two Pars, Five Bogies, One Double Bogey: Out 42
  • Back Nice: One Birdie, Five Pars, Three Bogies. Out 38, Total 80.
  • Total Round Time: 2:45
  • sThe key to the round was really the putting and second shot recovery game. Changing my putter grip from the original Scotty Cameron grip to the new Super Stroke Slim 2.0 was really awesome and a game changer for me. It just felt much better in my hands and I could feel the putter again. Line of sight and reading breaks to get within a good lag has always been my putting game, but this was much better. The short game with the new Vokey wedge was much improved as well. Being comfortable in the 100 yards or less range has been a struggle for me over the last couple of years. Getting it close too many pins in the round makes the difference in scoring better. My driving on the front nine was not that great. I missed a lot of fairways and had to make a second shot to recover, which I did to save for Bogies.

Round Highlights.

  • Image One: Par 4 , 349 yards, On in two after a beautiful 5 iron from 190 yards out. Birdie!
  • Image Two. Par 4, 380 yards, On in two after a great 3 wood from 230 yards up hill. Birdie!

It was a fast, hot and fun round. I hope to continue the trend of good play and finally breaking 80. Till the Next Round…..
